You'll find that an XL1 is not really rated as a 'Pro' camera as you call it even though it does cost a whack!
Something like a SonyDSR500 is getting up the pro ladder weighing in at about ?8000 each.
Is the XL1 worth it? yep, if you need it, no, if you don't.

I just purchased a panasonic home-movie style DV camcorder. (I could get up and get its model name, but im too lazy.) Anyway, It seems to me that you guys dont think of the 3 or 4 grand you pay for a Xl-1 as very much money. But (at least in this point in my life) it really is. So, Do I really need a Xl-1 or equilivant?

im sure your like me, and dont have a lot of cash - therefor you dont need a pro HiDef dv cam - you would find that you would need to invest another ?8000 on a DV deck to read the tape for editing...
youl find that if you are starting out, spending about ?1500 is a must on a good mini DV cam (3ccd is better), the picture is good, its got better creative controls than a > ?600 model, basically go for semi-pro not pro models!
and trust me we do think 3 or 4 grand for a semi pro cam is a lot of money - ?1.50 sounds nicer 'i'll take a dozen'
